“Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice.” (Psalm 51:8 NIVUK)
Ears and eyes, taste, touch and smell, are all God’s gifts to us. They help us interpret and enjoy the living world. If one of these five senses is not functioning properly, it can throw us a bit off-balance. In recent days, I have been struggling with wax in my ears. It can be very frustrating, and not a little embarrassing to ask people to repeat what they have said, again and again. So, trying to clear the blockage, I have dropped oil into my ears each night before retiring to bed. Today, for the first time in a while, I have a wee glimmer of hope that the wax is starting to clear, and it is bliss. Likewise, in today’s Bible verse, David anticipates what it will be like to have his spiritual hearing restored. He is eager to know once more the “joy and gladness,” which results from the LORD’s still, small voice. David has found that repentance from sin is akin to asking God for a spiritual hearing-aid. And, notice this, the word hEARt, at its centre, includes the word EAR! As we open our ears to His Gospel message, our hearts soften towards Christ, as well as those whom He calls us to serve. I pray that you (and I) will clearly hear His call today.
