"My command is this: love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends." (John 15: 12-13 NIV UK) We live in a day of the pre-emptive strike. Get in the first blow, either physically or by word of mouth, before someone else hurts you. A great deal of anger simmers just below the surface in a wide array of people. And, it comes quickly to the fore in road rage or behind closed doors in homes where abuse is commonplace. We hear people say, "The best form of defence is attack." Jesus Christ turns that notion upside-down and inside-out. Think of the role of a bodyguard; rather than shoot to save the one they are protecting, should they not be prepared to take a bullet for them? Similarly, the way of the Saviour is one of service and sacrifice. He calls us to follow His example in our dealings daily with others.
