Leonardo Da Vinci was a scientist, sculptor, engineer, philosopher, musician, and, oh yes, a rather famous painter! Yet, his love of nature and of God’s creatures is perhaps less well known. It is reported that, more than once, Da Vinci went to the market in the Italian town where he lived to purchase caged birds. These were not a delicacy to eat, nor were they models for his artwork. Each time, he set them free in the surrounding countryside. He simply couldn’t bear to see such beautiful creatures, which God had made for flight and freedom, cooped up in a cage. How much more important to God than the birds of the air are you and I?  "…if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." (John 8:36 NIVUK)
